2024-12-18, Painter's Notes, originally titled Worship Jesus Christ, Hare Krishna, Edmonton Oilers: This 2021 painting, was painted inside Violet King Henry Plaza, was retired today. It found a new home with an artist by chance, while she was out walking her dog 🐶
2017, "She smiles after all that..." retitled to "Jodie Smiles" This painting is part of my 2017 "Not a Bystander" art project. Over two days at City Hall and the Legislature, I surveyed the public, asking, "What should I paint?" to address themes of anger, violence, and bullying. The overwhelming response was to focus on beauty, healing, and hope, avoiding triggers and negativity, which are all too common in the news. Created on the Alberta Legislature grounds and in Sir Winston Churchill Square, I invited passersby to add their own strokes of paint. A school class even suggested painting an emoji depicting anger on the back. Through this collaborative effort, "Jodie Smiles" emerged, a testament to collective creativity and human spirit.
The UCP (Hon) David Hanson suggested I paint a crow for its intelligent nature, and NDP MLA Rod Loyola recommended a Yellow Star, representing hope in Rod's birthplace, Colombia, South America. The painted heart was suggested by a young woman named Misty, who in 2017, was at a crossroads in deciding her future. Today she is a successful chef and homeowner. I named my 2021 Misty HeArt project after her, a project that focused my paintbrush and news camera on humanity and legacy. After seven years of participating in outdoor public Art Show & Tell and LISTEN, it’s time for "Jodie Smiles" to find a home where she can be loved and cherished. I will begin the process of finding a home in 2025. T-shirts of Jodie Smiles have been printed under my personal LISTEN label wear and worn inside the Alberta 29th, 30th, and 31st Legislature gallery during session.
